"A Brief History"

The presence of man on the land now covered by the golf course can be dated back to the Palaeolithic Era (Stone Age) since stone axe heads and antler tools have been unearthed in the area of the fourteenth green. Further testament to the continued use of the site by Early Man was the discovery, in Victorian times, of eight 'post-holes' on the upper part of the

course. These would have formed the foundations of an Iron Age ritual circle, or 'henge' and the charred remains of one of these posts have been radiocarbon-dated to circa 4000 BC. However, the most obvious relics of our ancestors are the two Bronze Age 'tumuli', or burial mounds, c2000 BC, which are clearly visible to the rear of the 10th green and at the far end of the practice ground.

Eaton Golf Club was the brain-child of 'Jack' Read (pictured right), who was a local businessman and keen sportsman who had played polo on the site with officers from the city's cavalry barracks at the turn of the century. He negotiated a lease on the upper section of the course with the Gurney family, who were owners of much of the land in the vicinity.
