"A Brief History"

The Club House - before the fire of 1921
They were prominent bankers and Gurney's Bank eventually merged with Barclays. It was at a meeting held on October 10th 1910 that the club was born although play did not start until June of the following year. Ernest Riseborough, the professional at Sheringham Golf Club was commissioned to lay out the initial 9 holes on the 40 acres above the Yare valley. He expressed the opinion that "the land was well adapted to the purpose and would make a sporting course".
With a fast growing membership, 250 at the end of 1911, it became apparent that the Club now needed a full 18 holes. Jack Read persuaded the Gurneys to lease the land in the valley and J H Taylor, 5 times Open Champion and prolific golf course architect, was engaged to design the layout. He was 'much impressed by the view across the Vale of Keswick and the wooded heights beyond' and felt that Eaton 'should now become quite a first class links'. The extended course was open for play by late 1912.
